May 6, 2017 — On an uncharacteristically cold and windy Saturday night, the San Diego Growlers hosted the Vancouver Riptide in a must-win game for both teams.
Vancouver got off to a quick start by scoring on offense and secured the first break of the game after San Diego dropped the pull, 2-0. The Growlers bounced back and rattled off three straight before the Riptide tied the game at 3’s. San Diego was smooth on offense then earned two critical break points right before the first quarter ended to go up 6-3.
San Diego received the second quarter pull, gave up the quick break, but then scored twice in a row, 8-4. Both teams traded offensive scores, then the Growlers ran a defensive zone that forced an errant throw and a break score, 10-5. Each team traded twice before San Diego finished off the half with two more breaks, including a buzzer beater from Dan Bellinger to Zeke Ivers, 14-7.
The Growlers picked up right where they left off by breaking the Riptide a couple of times to start the third quarter, 17-8. The teams traded lengthy points, highlighted by a layout catch by Sean Ham, until Vancouver ended the quarter with two breaks and a buzzer beater of their own, 18-12.
The Riptide needed to start scoring quick goals, but did the opposite to start the 4th quarter when the Growlers held on offense and broke, 20-12. The wind was really a factor at this point and led to several turnovers per point, which drained the clock. The teams traded two scores each to end the game, with yet another buzzer beater from Hunter Corbett to Max Hume for the Growlers first win, 22-14.
Hunter Corbett led the Growlers with a +6 performance (6 assists, 3 goals, 3 turnovers). Tyler Bacon (1 assist, 1 goal, 3 defensive blocks) and Zeke Ivers (3 assists, 2 goals, 1 defensive block, 1 turnover) added solid +5 games as well. Click here to see some pictures from the game.
San Diego will travel north to Vancouver to play the Riptide again on Saturday, May 6th and after several more away games, the next home game will be the AUDL Game of the Week on Friday, June 9th versus the Seattle Cascades.
